Fire Rated Portable Cabins

Sir Robert McAlpine is a leading UK building and civil engineering company awarded Principal Contractor on a new project in the centre of Exeter. The project is a multi-storey new student development comprising apartments, studios and en suite shared flats together with a range of amenities and dedicated private open space. The scheme also includes 20,000 square feet of new shops and restaurants.

To manage the project in Exeter the Sir Robert McAlpine site team needed to hire temporary workspace during the construction phase but had limited space on site. It was evident that there were severe site restrictions in that the cabins would need to be installed in a part of the development that had minimal overhead height and many concrete pillars to negotiate.

Due to the nature of the site McAlpine needed to provide fire resistance to their people and property.

To help overcome these issues the site management team called on the knowledge and experience of the Pickerings local hire team based at Exeter Willand. Upon completing a site survey Pickerings recommended installing fire rated portable cabins and moving them into their temporary spaces with the use of trolleys. To avoid causing traffic congestion to roads adjacent to the site in Exeter city centre Pickerings would need to install the portable cabins during a weekend.

Pickerings safely and efficiently delivered and installed 13 fire rated portable cabins for use as Principal Contractor site offices, sub-contractor site offices, canteen, drying room and induction room.

“With very restricted access both getting onto the site and within the confines of the development in Exeter city centre Pickerings managed the delivery and installation of the fire rated portable cabins to the highest standards. We are very pleased to have selected Pickerings.”

At the end of the hire contract when the Pickerings fire rated portable cabins had been collected we received the following comments from staff on the Sir Robert McAlpine site.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of the people involved in the removal and collection from site of the portable cabins. The lads did a safe and professional job. Well done to all and we look forward to working with Pickerings again
